Five ways to burn more fat during a Zumba Fitness Class

Shape Magazine, one of the most trusted sources of fitness, has an excellent (and brief!) article about 5 ways to burn more fat during a Zumba Fitness class.

Whether or not you are looking to burn more fat, the tips they offer  will help you enjoy the class and make the most out of it (I especially like tip #1 and tip #5).

It’s always important to consult with your physician before using these tips to burn more fat during a Zumba Fitness class.

Remember: safety first! You don’t need to maximize you movements (arms, hips, whatever) to have fun. Just let it go and listen to your body, you know what you can and what you shouldn’t do.

Vitamin D deficiency during the Winter

Did you know that you are likely to experience Vitamin D deficiency during the winter?

Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin” because the body produces it in response to sunlight. During the winter months we not only have less sunshine but we cover more skin so it’s likely the levels of vitamin D in our system drop.

Read this article to find out more about Vitamin D deficiency during the winter and how to keep your level healthy.

We associate vitamin D with bone health but it’s also very important for our immune system. Low levels of it might result in more colds and other diseases. This article from Self Magazine offers valuable information about the importance of vitamin D and other ways to get it besides from the sun.

Self Magazine is a trusted source of information about health and fitness but nothing can substitute your Doctor’s recommendations so talk to them if you have more questions about Vitamin D deficiency during the winter. Here is the link to the article again:  http://www.self.com/fooddiet/blogs/nutritiondata/2008/02/winter-warning.html

Stay healthy and keep dancing, exercise is good for your immune system!

What are the best shoes for Zumba® Fitness?

While you may be having a lot of fun during a Zumba® Fitness class, your knees and feet may be asking you for a break.

To get an even better experience and to protect your joints and your health, it’s important to wear the right sneakers. There are at least three things to keep in mind when selecting the sneakers for a class: they should offer you the support you need, they should allow you easy-flowing movement (lateral, medial, twisting motions) and they should NOT have a lot of tread at the bottom.

Everyone needs a different kind of support from their sneakers. Your feet should feel snug but supported in the arch and the heel. If your sneakers feel comfortable but not very supportive, you can wear insoles. Try on different kinds of sneakers to feel the difference.  We even do some Zumba moves on the floor of the store to try them out before purchasing them.

If you notice knee pain after your class or you feel like your feet get stuck performing some of the movements, your sneakers might be to blame . During a Zumba® Fitness class you will perform lateral moves and need sneakers that allow you to do that comfortably. Most running shoes are designed for forward-motion so you may feel difficulty to go laterally or to twist. Also, walking shoes have a lot of tread and will keep your feet from moving further.

This is why the best shoes for a Zumba® Fitness class are shoes that do not offer a lot of tread at the bottom, like cross-trainers or dance-specific sneakers. Some of the best sneakers for class have a circle that allows you to pivot easily:

If you don’t own the best sneakers for a Zumba Fitness Class and are not ready to invest in some, don’t worry! You can still come to class and enjoy it. Protect your knees by picking up your feet, make sure not to lock your knees and keep them in line with your toes. Be safe and have fun!

Until next time, keep on dancing!

How do you look during a Zumba class?

I love this Blog Post from the Dusty Earth Mother (you will have to visit her Blog to see what I mean):

I didn’t look this Purty during Zumba

How do you think you look during a Zumba® class? I bet you look much better than you think! The less you worry about getting the steps perfect, the more fun you can have.

Read this blog post about a mom’s experience with her first Zumba® class and laugh with her!:

New Zumba® Fitness Class in Mechanicsburg!

Hello friends!

Tomorrow, Tuesday Sept. 13th, my dear friend and fellow Zumba® Instructor Beth Truitt and I will start teaching a Zumba Fitness Class in Mechaniscburg!

The classes will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 410 East Simpson Street, Mechanicsburg, starting at 9:45 a.m.

Come party with us! Two Instructors, two different styles, one big party!. One of the cool things about having two Instructors is that you have more options regarding range of motion and dancing style.

Beth will keep most of the choreography lower impact while I show a higher impact version of a given move. You pick your style, your level of fitness, your intensity, and add your own flavor!

The classes are $5 walk-ins.

Sorry, no punch cards  and no babysitting provided for now. Perfect for when the kids are in school.

Keep dancing!
